The Adler after-talk at Jak's Tap
I mentioned we'd locked in the after-talk place, but didn't say where. The Evening at Adler after-talk will take place at Jak's Tap around 9:45pm, and will basically just be a lot of fun.
We'll kick up our feet, drink, greet, and I'm told you might be able to get some sneak peeks at some software on its way.
The address:
Now, some specifics, as Jak's was ideal for many reasons, and we had some help getting this to happen...
- 40 beers on tap. Oh yes, I said 40 beers on tap.
- The owner was gracious enough to donate free Wi-Fi.
- The owner was gracious enough to waive the fees associated with using up their room. This is extremely cool, and he apparently likes geeks. We'll have our own server, so be sure to tip them. Seriously.
- We'll have the use of the Green Room, which you can see on their website (note the green carpet).
- Jak's has a varied menu of yummo stuff.
- A very cool low-key Chicago-bar vibe.
- Open till 2am.
- Under-21 is welcome, but no drinking. Seriously.
- If you're wondering how to get there from the planetarium, check out their map page -- basically head West several blocks. It's about as close as you can get while still being able to accommodate the crowd, but if you're thinking of hoofing it, do remember its chilly...
I have to note that this is one of those times where a reader really comes through as an unsung hero, and this time it was Matt Maloney at GrubHub.com, a chicago website devoted towards hooking you up with places that deliver to your area. I learned really quickly that:
- It can be really, really difficult to find space with just a month in advance, as they're often taken up by corporate things and weddings and such.
- When you do, it often costs significant amounts of money to get that space because the business now has a bunch of extra things to deal with.
- Normals get confused and nerverous when you call them introducing yourself as "drunkenbatman, who may be showing up with a large group of thirsty people."
Luckily the man behind GrubHub reads, and once he knew the type of place I was after, was a godsend in getting me off the phone and making it happen. It saved me a ton of stress, and I'm very grateful for their helping out the event as they have.

Priorties. ;)
This sounds like a lot of fun, can't wait for the podcast. Will it be a yearly event? I couldn't get the cash together in time, but if I know in advance I'd start saving now.

I'm planning on going with a friend... Is there a cover charge?

Jaks even has vegetarian [but not vegan {because those folks are freakish}] friendly food.
Just one more reason why I should be allowed to sell a daughter on ebay to fund a road-trip.

Vegan menu items:
Hummus w/ Grilled Pita
Pico de Gallo w/ Tortilla Chips
Fresh Basil Minestrone (would have to double check the stock)
Six Gun Chilli minus the cheese and sour cream on top
House Salad minus cheese
Pizza minus cheese
Veggie Burrito minus cheese and sour cream
TWO Veggie burgers minus cheese
Apple Pie minus ice cream
Just in case there are any vegan readers left after the constant ridicule.

Vegan menu items:
Why bother? A life withuot cheese is not really a life worth living. And if that cheese takes the form of curds, all the better.
M-m-m-m curds.

No disrespect to the East Coast fellowship,
but it really is about time we had cool geek
events here in Chi-Town ;-)! It really is an
awsome city with very cool people.
Thanks to db and all that have supported
his efforts on this one.

There is something about your use of the word "Normals" that is just so freakin' hilarious. Seriously.
